Pirates too good for Light Stars in Champions League

Cape Town – Orlando Pirates eased into the first round of the CAF Champions League as they defeated Seychelles outfit Light Stars 3-1 on Wednesday.

Coach Milutin Sredojevic made a raft of his changes to his starting line-up in the contest, as he looks ahead to the Telkom Knockout final on Saturday against Baroka at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

The result sees the Sea Robbers record an 8-2 aggregate victory after thumping the minnows 5-1 last week in the first leg.

Linda Mntambo, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Abel Mabaso all scored for Pirates, who conceded a late strike at the Amitie Stadium.

Mntambo got the first after 11 minutes after good work from Kudakwashe Mahachi. On the hour mark, Gabuza added a second for his first goal of the campaign for Bucs in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Mabaso got the third soon afterwards as the away side cruised against their less heralded opponents.

In the closing stages the hosts did manage to pull one back for a consolation strike though it was a cruise for Pirates as they moved to the next stage of Africa’s most prestigious club competition.
